Eating Up or Down....does it make a difference ?
« on: 06/11/2004 03:18:30 »
Hello Medical Specialists and people who know things.

I have two food and drink related queries:

  • 1:....Does it make any difference if you eat standing up or sitting down ?
Obviously sitting down quells bodily motion , but apart from that is there any difference to digestion and ingestion between the two deportments and posture ?

  •  2:....I once heard that it is in fact preferable for the body to NOT drink any liquid when consuming food. I think it was because a drink intereres with the digestion. Any truth in this ?

Thank you for consuming my nutrional bio-matter orientated questions.

Well Neil, I'm not a real doctor but after thinking hard about this one for five days, I reckon that it makes no difference unless its a big meal. If we go to a poncey function, like the one I went to last week. We stand up for hours nibbling away at canapes and the like. And we don't get indigestion unless the food is bad.

Mixing curry with the Guinness never did me any harm, in fact it made me feel great!

I'm still stressed and nervous about tomorrow afternoon, but it will be over in twenty minutes. Wish me luck everybody!

I would think that eating while sitting or standing shouldn't make a difference since it is peristalsis, the wavelike motion of the intestines that propels the food and not gravity.  Thus, you can swallow water upside down.  As for drinking and eating, I've heard those theories too and don't know that they make much common sense to me.  After all, your food has a certain amount of liquid in it, and we digest it just fine.

Thanks Nancy you truly are a gorgeous slice of nursey totty !! (That's a compliment by the way)....I appreciate your answer and glad that you've also heard  about the drinking/eating thing....I was beginning to think I had imagined it all those years ago when I'm sure I saw it on a medical programme....I don't think it was sopmething that was supposed to be taken under strict advisement, it was more along the lines of what you have said that the difference to digestion is really inconsequential but that it does make a slight difference in that it aids digestion slightly to NOT drink........I ususally find it very difficult to not have a drink of water with a meal though...I'm sure that's the same for most people.

About eating and drinking at the same time. What I learned about the stomach is that it has some sort of gully which allows liquids to pass through when the stomach is filled with food. Liquids could dilute the acids in the stomach that help digestion (a possible reason not to eat and drink simultaneously).

In my own experience (I generally don't drink and eat) my appetite is reduced when I do drink during eating. I will eat less in such a case.

Regarding human health and things you should and shouldn't do. Don't pay to much attention. Even "scientific evidence" is often trivial if the statistics behind are examined closer. Some attitudes may turn 180 degrees, e.g. regarding fats.

Thank you very much Duncan. I think you've hit the nail on the head with the exact reason that I heard all those years ago.

..........and I totally agree with your final paragraph and really appreciate your comment.

Thanks to everyone for finally answering my query.
