A solar hot water system is well within the realm of a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) person.
There are many descriptions on the WWW about assembling solar panels from individual cells, although I think that most people choose to start with solar panels. There is on reason that the rest of the system couldn't be installed by a DIY person. However, it can be frustrating that some of the materials needed can't be acquired at the local building supply store.
Oh...
You mean that kind of a "solar system".
