Do male and female animals sleep together, like humans?
« on: 30/09/2011 22:30:02 »
Asta  asked the Naked Scientists:

Hello

Are there any animals or birds in nature, that male and female sleep next to each other during the night?

Thank you very much!

Asta

What do you think?

In many cases, animal and human interactions are different.  Animals will sleep together for warmth or protection, but not always in male/female pairs.  And, in many cases copulation is not associated with sleeping.

Many birds actually make pairs, sometimes for the life of the pair.  The pair may spend significant amounts of time together, but the breeding and sleeping rituals are likely separate.

With mammals, in some cases a dominant male will have a harem of several females.  In other cases, the males and females may go separate ways after breeding season.
