Ahhh, found the article. This isn't surprising as I think synthetic viruses were created a couple of years ago.
This will be a big step forward if researchers choose to try to clone Mammoths or Neanderthals, or if for specific gene therapy.
Actually, the incremental approach might work with cloning something like a Mammoth.
Start with an Elephant fertilized egg, then start working on manipulating each chromosome.... and use nature to make lots of "backup copies".
