I have a rather antique printer 1995 (LaserJet 4 M Plus) vintage that normally serves me well but today I tried to print out a 29 page PDF document using Acrobat 10.0 and ended up having to print one page at a time with missed portions and many strange error messages.
So I hunted around and found a free and simple PDF reader Sumatra PDF that worked like a dream.
I only have windows 8.1 and Windows 10 systems maybe it would have been OK with an older system.

PS I Tried with Puppy Linux but could not get the usb printer to connect

I run USB with Fedora just fine.  You may need to install drivers.  I think the printer drivers would be with CUPS.  Anyway, USB is pretty widely supported except with NT.

What were your error messages? 

I wonder if you're having a memory problem.  According to notes, the printer should be able to support about 50MB maximum (3 x 16MB + 2).  Hopefully they're pretty cheap.

Can I ask how do you connect it? Parallel port card?
I've just moved to Win 7 and want to connect old LJ 4, not sure whether drivers will work

I don't have a printer port so I have to connect via an expensive USB adapter cable, you should have no problem with windows 7  windows will pull in a great range of drivers for antique printers if you are patient
