Do we need to close our eyes to go to sleep?
« on: 28/08/2006 09:14:03 »
When we close our eyes, we are resting in a way. Then we sleep. But why do we need to close our eyes to sleep?

Don't make me angry, I have advanced "Green Technology".

guess its a reflex action. although there is evidence that people have slept with their eyes open, either they are really freakishly messed up, or suffering from exhaustion in my opinion. maybe its just a built in reflex to protect our eyes from outside factors, seen as when we arent concious we cant really spring into action that quickly. like when a ballon gets popped near your face..you instinctively shut your eyes, something you cant stop. thats my humble opinion, although its probably not right lol

My nephew sleeps with his eyes open , its freaky . I remember checking on him when he first stayed at my house, i thought he was wide awake and ignoring me. My son threw a pillow at him for being rude and it woke him up.

However in order for him to fall asleep he closes him eyes just like the rest of us, but once asleep they open.

that would be freaky to see, especially when REM kicks in. my other theory on the closed eyes is just purely down to muscle relaxation.

That is wild!  But kinda funny...LOL  I am sure your nephew was mad at your son for doing that...but I probably would've done the same thing!  LOL[}:)]

The is a question of the activeness of the muscles of the eye to cover up the eye socket when the eyes are expected to be passive

i was curious about this myself,
i believe it was because... at some point..completely pitch black and i couldn't tell the difference from when my eyes were open to when they were closed.
and i was actually pondering if you could sleep with eyes open

i based my theory on the fact that when you're tired, your eyes start to droop, then u wake up hours later and realise what happened lol. my guess is the muscles in the eyelids are the weakest in the body???

By the way, how do snakes and fishes try to sleep? They sleep with their eyes wide open, right?

I think so...well, I've never asked this question, though it is interesting to know really. I know fish don't have eyelids and I suppose they sleep with eyes wide open. Uncomfortable huh

That's why I am curious. Do they just exhaust themselves until passing out with their eyes wide open?
