Should I accept any covid-19 vaccine offered
« on: 01/02/2021 16:36:24 »
As the chances of getting the second shot of the Pfizer vaccine which in any case would out of the three week window seem to be getting ever more remote should I accept any other vaccine offered ?
I was pleased to get the Pfizer as it seemed the most advanced but the politicians seem to have taken over from the medics !

Invoking the Fauci rule: If you don't know, say so.

The original clinical trials were for a single brand of vaccine. So we don't know for sure.

There are far fewer vaccine doses available than the number of people who need them, so I expect that your situation will be common.
- The intense monitoring of post-vaccination results will eventually provide solid answers

In another thread, Dr Chris Smith drew on his experience as a virologist to suggest it would be ok.

A few days ago, Jonathan Van Tam (Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England) said exactly the same thing on TV and was universally praised for it. People gave up believing anything a politician (or even a civil servant standing next to a politician) says, about 40 years ago. JVT was interviewed alone in his office, with no flags or soldiers in the background.

The scientific answer to many questions is "I don't know, but here's our best guess / a safe assumption / what worked last time." And people believe it.

Don't let anyone inject anything into you, unless you're sure why they're doing it

Generally, it would be because I asked them to.

The UK will actually run a clinical trial to test the efficacy of combining AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines as first and second doses.

This would address concerns that the human body might react to the AstraZeneca "carrier" adenovirus, and reject the second dose of this vaccine before it is fully effective in priming the immune system to the coronavirus spike protein.
- So we will eventually know for sure - but they still need to wait for nearly 200 infections to be sure
- This might take a while, since with around 90% efficacy, you need to wait for 10 times as many SARS-COV2 exposures to reach the required number of infections.
- But with the high number of infections underway in the UK, maybe not so long after all!

I saw the results on the news tonight...

Quote from: BBC
AZ followed by Pfizer induced higher antibodies and T cell responses than Pfizer followed by AZ
Both of these mixes induced higher antibodies than two doses of AZ
The highest antibody response was seen after two doses of Pfizer, and the highest T cell response from AZ followed by Pfizer
