what is the substance they use to make the smoke, when smoking a bee hive? Why is that substance used and not another?

I am pretty sure it is from a piece of burlap bag but I never asked my neighbor why burlap. He is a bee keeper!
He put a small torn piece in this little pot and lights it and allows it to smoulder and smoke when working his hives!
