Barnard's Loop around the Horsehead Nebula

Bigger version here

Why is the Horsehead Nebula surrounded by a bubble? Although hard to make out, the famous Horsehead Nebula is the slight dark indentation in the bright streak just to the left of the image center. Glowing like an emission nebula, the origin of the bubble, known as Barnard's Loop, is currently unknown. Progenitor hypotheses include the winds from bright Orion stars and the supernovas of stars long gone. Barnard's Loop is too faint to be identified with the unaided eye. The nebula was discovered only in 1895 by E. E. Barnard on long duration film exposures. The above image was taken in a single specific color emitted by hydrogen to bring out detail. To the left of the Horsehead Nebula, visible as a small dark indentation, is the photogenic Flame Nebula.

nice photos. I will share in my own ideas and experienced. I am from Philippines and located in the South of the Philippines. Ever night, I can see the very light star. I know it was a planet because I learned and knows that 2009 is the planetary alignment. This year happen to me not like last year no very light star appear every night. I strongly believed it was a planet not an ordinary star or galaxy.. same photos posted here Mars light photo.

This has to be my all time favourite photo from Hubble. The so-called Pillars Of Creation where stars are being formed.

The Hubble Ultra Deep Field

I think this represents what equates to a portion of the sky the size of a pinhead !!!

Wow!! awesome post dude!!! it takes ones breath away!!!
it makes one feel tiny and humble... it seems we are not even a tiny speck of  dust!!!!

Each speck in this picture is a galaxy....each galaxy has about 100-300 BILLION Stars !!..and there's something like 100-300 BILLION Galaxies out there !!

Do you get it ?...can you even imagine such a thing ?...can you even fathom it ?

Yeah, the Hubble Deep Field image has to be one of the most important images ever produced.

The Big Bang theory is an effort to explain what happened at the very beginning of our universe. Discoveries in astronomy and physics have shown beyond a reasonable doubt that our universe did in fact have a beginning. Prior to that moment there was nothing; during and after that moment there was something: our universe. The big bang theory is an effort to explain what happened during and after that moment.

According to the standard theory, our universe sprang into existence as "singularity" around 13.7 billion years ago. What is a "singularity" and where does it come from? Well, to be honest, we don't know for sure. Singularities are zones which defy our current understanding of physics. They are thought to exist at the core of "black holes." Black holes are areas of intense gravitational pressure. The pressure is thought to be so intense that finite matter is actually squished into infinite density (a mathematical concept which truly boggles the mind). These zones of infinite density are called "singularities." Our universe is thought to have begun as an infinitesimally small, infinitely hot, infinitely dense, something - a singularity. Where did it come from? We don't know. Why did it appear? We don't know.

This is the picture that had such a huge effect on me I became an astronomer! I think I was about 10-12 years old at the time and just imagining the fact that each of the little bits poking out were whole solar systems forming blew my mind!

In the Heart of the Tarantula Nebula
Credit: ESA, NASA, ESO, & Danny LaCrue

 [ Invalid Attachment ]

BIG PICCY HERE (Makes a great desktop piccy)

In the heart of monstrous Tarantula Nebula lies huge bubbles of energetic gas, long filaments of dark dust, and unusually massive stars. In the center of this heart, is a knot of stars so dense that it was once thought to be a single star. This star cluster, labeled as R136 or NGC 2070, is visible just above the center of the above image and home to a great number of hot young stars. The energetic light from these stars continually ionizes nebula gas, while their energetic particle wind blows bubbles and defines intricate filaments. The above representative-color picture of this great LMC nebula details its tumultuous center. The Tarantula Nebula, also known as the 30 Doradus nebula, is one of the largest star-formation regions known, and has been creating unusually strong episodes of star formation every few million years.

Meteorites are classified into three basic categories: irons, stones, and stony irons. Iron meteorites, or “irons”, are actually a combination of iron, nickel, and cobalt. Iron is the predominant metal, with 5% up to 50% nickel, and a trace of cobalt.
Stone meteorites, also called “stony meteorites” or stones, are mostly believed to be material from the crust and mantle of asteroids. A few stony meteorites are thought to be from comets. Stone meteorites contain approximately 75% to 90% silicate materials, such as olivine and pyroxene.
Stony–iron meteorites, or stony–irons, are mixtures of silicates and iron–nickel in roughly equal proportions(stony-irons are rare).

How do they determine what planet a meteor came from, if that's the case?

Also, who would one contact if they had a meteor specimen they'd like to have examined/analyzed?

If you're in the UK, I'd recommend the Natural History Museum, or a local university.

Did you know that there is an excellent yet powerful type of software available to explore the Universe in all its glory and formation. One of the first extraordinary insights into the Universe, available on the computer software markert, "Uniview" provides the user to travel to different planets - stars, comets, galaxies, moons and planets pin-pointed to the exact degree!

In our ever modernising world of technology, such software is uniquely different to offer students across the world interested in roaming space and appreciating the size, volume and richness of matter which is out there.

I remember seing a nice high resolution image of the Pleiades star cluster in an Astronomy book in Barnes and Noble, and I was immediately captivated by it's beauty and grandeur.  I felt connected to the place i was seeing.

I've pretty much been obsessed with Astronomy ever since. :P

Question ~ if we look back in time at ancient cosmological artifacts, then why has no one ever bothered to construct a model of what the universe looks like now? Precisely, are we inherenly swiming in a space time which will always refuse to allow us to "see" distance, or "move" through what we monkey-like call distance, space, and time? I personally think we are out of our depth, and need to interrogate the underpinnings of our mathematical system. It is sorta primitive, based as it is on assumed agreed one banana two banana intergers.

Not sure if this will come out full size as I've taken it from my phone.

This was a pic of the Moon I took back in February with a webcam and a Celestron Nexstar 102 SLT

I think it was Hubble who came up with the big bang theory. He showed that objects were traveling way from the Earth. The truth is everything is based on what we call reproduction. As far as we are aware we are the only planet to contain life. For some reason only man posseses the remarkable feat of advanced intelligence. All other life forms on Earth are limited to the amount of intelligence they have. All life on Earth as the natural function of reproducing itself. Where are your great, great, great, great, great grand children. They do not exist yet. So where are they? But we all know one day in the future they will be here. You can say the same for plants and animals. Here is the most remarkable thing of all. Stars, Planets, galaxies all reproduce themselves as well. Non of these things are alive. If Hubble could have seen beyond, what this amazing telescope named after him could see. This Big Bang theory has happened countless times. Our brains cannot concieve or understand the size of the universe just because there are dark patches in the night sky, we tend to think there is nothing there. but the truth is there is, and there are countless Big Bangs. We are in no position to measure how big the universe is. We are in the same position as Christopher Columbus was when he travelled across the Atlantic. We have no idea of whats out there, how big it is and how far away is it.Gary
