Dear CatMilkologists and all luffers of all thing Feline,

Despite protestations by my bank manager and despite the appalling results of a feasibility study and business plan.....I still went ahead and opened my latest business venture....A Cat Bar on the Antarctic Tundra.

As ewe can see though, within minutes of opening Peregrine strolled in and ordered a pint of cow juice !

Anyway, we got chatting...(cos cats will tell their bar-tender things that they would normally keep secret)....and Peregrine mentioned that Cow juice is in fact not so good for Feline tummy wummys !!

Is this true ?...why so ?.......Peregrine seemed fine but I did hear a ' cackling throwing' up sound soon after he left ...followed by " Never again"....in the distance !

So, is Bovine Milk really not good for Peregrine ?

ooops...gotta shoot.....I have to prepare a Smoked Salmon Brioche for a hungry penguin! Sheesh !!..it's supposed to be a Cats Only bar !!

Cats are lactose intolerant, so suffer from digestive problems if they drink it. Mine love Whiskas cat milk.

Cat milk, as sold in pet shops, is not actually cat milk, but cow milk with the lactose removed. If you have had a cat, you will see the problem with actually milking a cat........ :)

I suppose you could if you really wanted to. Although special cat milk also contains added taurine (essential amino acid in cats), and I'm not sure if that would result in any problems in humans. If you're lactose intolerant yourself, goat's milk or soy milk (apparently not so great for males, but that's another story) are probably better options.

An adult cat with a balanced diet has no actual nutritional requirement for milk (...how many species can you name that consume milk as adults, let alone the milk of another species?), but it's a nice little marketing idea by the pet food companies to play off an image created by children's stories and nursery rhymes. Having said that, provided that the diet is adjusted so that the milk doesn't cause total energy requirements to be exceeded (causing weight problems), there's no harm in giving it to your cat.

On a separate note, this is Maggie:

She comes and sits next to the cow every night at milking time. When we've finished, she helps herself to the fresh milk. No one's told her she's meant to be lactose intolerant.

I have had cats for over 20 years and have never given them milk as my vet
has always told me that milk will damage their digestive systems as others have said that cats are lactose intolerant.

My present 2 cats only get tap water to drink along with food, of course  [:)]

Rosalind Franklin was my first cousin and one my life's main regrets is that I never met this brilliant and beautiful lady.
She discovered the Single DNA Helix in 1953, then it was taken by Wilkins without her knowledge or agreeement.
