Are you saying that it knows your status on YIM (whether you are logged on, etc.?). I am not sure it does know that, but if it does know that, it can only know that if it can probe the same status information that Yahoo Messenger can probe, but I cannot see how it can do that without having sought, and received, authorisation from you to do so.

Online presence allows people to see if you are currently online and using Yahoo! Messenger. To add online presence, you simply need to add some HTML to your web page. I'm Online Not OnlineIf a Yahoo! Messenger user clicks your online presence, an instant message window will open for them so they can type you an instant message.
