How does this site know when I am on YIM?

What do you mean "how does the site know you are on YIM"?

Are you asking how it knows what your YIM address is - it only knows that if you told it that.

Are you saying that it knows your status on YIM (whether you are logged on, etc.?).  I am not sure it does know that, but if it does know that, it can only know that if it can probe the same status information that Yahoo Messenger can probe, but I cannot see how it can do that without having sought, and received, authorisation from you to do so.

OK, a quick search of the web found that yahoo actually provides a tool specifically to allow an icon on a web page that changes according to the online status of YIM for that user.

I reckon you are referring to the member profile page, if so then what George says applies. Don't forget that you enter some details about your yahoo account when updating your profile.
