What happens when a rubber rubs pencil off paper?

Curious after Paul's post..

Does the rubber take a thin layer of the paper off as well.. Or just the layer of graphite from the pencil?

The eraser removes the paper fibers that are impregnated with the graphite (lead).

I've done that and got 100 lines. 'I must be more careful with my rubber.'

Judging by the birth rate around here I think some young men need to do the same lines.

Well then you too must be careful!!!

I think my problem was that I used an ink rubber which definitely removed paper. I was under the impression that it was only the slippery graphite and a very small amount of paper that was removed with a normal rubber.
