How does the bird learn how to speak?
« on: 07/04/2008 22:21:17 »
Are birds really that smart? Do they even know what it means?

How many birds can "speak"?

Thanks Sim  [:)]

I don't think they have the ability to communicate.
Only to copy words which they have heard being said a lot..
Such as "Good morning, Ryan" or something like that!

But I am not very sure..

Birds along the "Parrot" species can mostly talk.

Birds can communicate with each other but they mimic other sounds. The parrot across the road makes a sound like a trim phone. It can also whistle nursery rhymes.

My Grandma used to have a budgie in a cage, and it spoke a few words.... mainly "Wake up Eddie". The cage was at the bottom of the stairs, and every morning my Grandma would stand at the bottom of the stairs and yell for my uncle to wake up. The bird learned from the repetition.

I used to frequent a hostelry in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, where they had a minah bird on the bar. It could mimic the landlord perfectly and fooled quite a few customers by shouting "Time gentlemen please!" in a broad Yorkshire accent at random times.  [:D]

How does the bird learn how to speak?

A friend of mine used to keep rescue birds in his back garden. He once had a cockerteal that was really foul mouthed (excuse the pun.) The previous bad owners had taught it to say the most disgusting things. He kept having to apologise to all his neighbours who thought it was him swearing.

We also lived next to a old couple that were trying to teach their parrot the theme tune of a famous soap opera. Every night at 7.30pm the theme tune would start. Then Charlie and Peggy would start whistling tunelessly in order to encourage the bird to join in. The the confused parrot would start whistling 'Half a pound of tuppenny rice' which was the only tune it knew. This would then be repeated 30 minutes later and every week night for the three years we lived their. The bird never learnt the new tune. I very nearly went around with a shot gun a few times, especially as this coincided with my PGCE year and I was usually concentrating hard on lesson plans at this time of night.
Anyway this brings forward the question, do birds only learn to speak when they are young or can they learn new songs/words at any time.

There used to be a blackbird around here that had a ringing telephone sound in its call, it used to annoy me as sometimes it was calling very early in the morning.  [;D]

When the telephone box down the road was removed it then started to mimic a reversing car or truck noise. Its strange hearing normal bird song and then suddenly recognising added bits.

Is this your subtle way of suggesting that a bird that calls time prematurely will not live very long (may have a point there).

This implicitly must assume that you will live forever, for how else can a bird keep talking to you forever (unless you would desire that it keep talking to your skeleton long after your flesh has turned to dust).
