Damien asked the Naked Scientists:
Hi Chris,
I'm a frequent listener to your program and enjoy every aspect. I have a question about sneezing.
I have heard the when people sneeze it travels out of around 100ks per hour. Some people hold their sneeze in by either closing the mouth and nose or it just doesn't get let out. My question: Can this cause a brain aneurysm or any harm to the body when the sneeze is stopped in this manner.
Regards,
Damien
What do you think?

It can damage the delicate alveoli in th lungs when the back pressure hits them. Just conver your face when you sneeze. It is the body's way of getting rid of destructive or unwanted particles.

I did hear once that the reason we close our eyes when we sneeze is to stop them from popping out !! [

And people say bless you when you sneeze because they thought the devil would enter your body when you had your eyes closed and your mouth open. My husband sleeps like this, guess that explains the horns.

No, not gay, but he will poke anything with his pitchfork. Be careful next time you sneeze.
