Why can't you believe two things at once?

Anton Molodtsov asked the Naked Scientists:

Why one's mind can't live with cognitive dissonance inside itself?
Why we always should have only one major belief?

What do you think?

This may not help much but it's probably the same as not being able to see simultaneously the two images in the famous, visually ambiguous duck/rabbit drawing that psychologists and philosophers love so much.
It's what Wittgenstein called aspect seeing, and it highlights the complications of perceiving, knowing and interpreting.

    Two thoughts here. [:)]

    1. Either its a way to prevent us from going mad having to live with twin personalities.

    Or

    2. Its  related to something like survival and them life or death decisions which need to be made in a fraction of a second. Maybe Our brains have developed in such a way that in order to safeguard our survival its best to believe in one  thing at a time eliminating indecision at critical life threatening times. Ok as humans we dont really need to make them as much but having belief in one thing and not being indecisive in your actions caused by mixed beliefs has probably saved many lives and is probably shared amongst all living organisms.

Well I am actually always trying to find a second viewpoint on everything, it really was difficult starting off, but after a few years and a lot of practice it gets a lot easier, if your really motivated you should try it, just take anything you feel is important enough to work hard for, just take your idea about that specific thing, and dissagree with yourself, then debate until you believe the secondary view. If you manage to get good at this it really helps with working with annoying co workers!

What about people with Schizophrenia, do they believe two or more things at the same time ? if you carry multiple personalities, surely each is running at the same time, not one on the rest off !or do each personality use its own little bit of your brain, and be totally annonymous to the other parts !each being dominant at different times !
