Are there different types of pain receptors?
« on: 11/07/2008 18:31:13 »
We have taste buds that are receptive to different tastes, rods & cones in our eyes that are receptive to different colours. Do we have different pain receptors for different types of pain? Do we just have 1 type that reacts differently to different stimuli?

I ask because I've pulled a ligament in my elbow and it's a burning pain. I sometimes get the same kind of pain in my back due to a long-term injury. But I also get a dull ache in my back at times, a totally different type of pain, but caused by the same injury.

Nocioceptors: receptors which respond to potentially harmful stimuli.
