When tyres wear out, where does all the rubber go?
« on: 18/07/2008 10:10:03 »
Debbie Watson asked the Naked Scientists:

My Dad in Flatpoint, New Zealand wants to know: when your tyres wear down, where does the rubber go?

Hope you can help. I'll be listening to Ask the Naked Scientists if you have the answer.

Debbie.

What do you think?

Abraded off on to the road surface or burnt by friction. It is a good point that there must be a fair bit of rubber dust about because, except for certain places, you don't see the roads blackened by it. I guess most of it gets washed away via the drains.
