Women vs Male... is it true
« on: 18/01/2005 19:51:25 »
Do women use more of their brain then men?  And are men generally better at math than women?

Being a woman, I would have to say of course we use more of our brain than men.  But seriously, there are things men are better at than women and vice versa.  Women see better in the dark than men.  Men are generally better at math.  Women abstract better than men.  (Ever watch a man try to explain something.  He'll usually want a piece of paper to draw on).  Men have better distance perception than women.  There's a great book I read a long time ago on that called "Brain Sex" that describes how the male and female brain are actually organized differently.  That might get to more of what you're asking about.

Isn't it the other way around? Men see better in the dark than women, and women have better color vision and detail vision than men.

And of course men want to draw on a piece of paper. That way they don't have to talk about it, endlessly. Just draw the figure, and make the point. Then move on. That's a man's way.

I heard that women will hear a sound first, but men will be able to locate the origin of the sound more accurately.  Is this true?

I hear that you can't make this large general distinction between the sexes as it is more of a sliding scale of sex. Especially in the brain, as any difference is due to the amount of testosterone present during fetal development, therefore accounting for homosexuality and the diverseness of everyone’s behavior. So it’s hard to say what women are better at than men and vice-versa. I agree with the communication stuff though [;)]. It is definitely easier to explain something to someone of your own sex, mainly because you have an insight into their perception. I’m sure If I had grown up only around women I would be fairly proficient at explaining things their way, at least I hope it works that way or there is no hope for me [:D].

I agree with you on the sliding scale factor, but I'm not sure if i believe it has anything (or at least not all) to do with testosterone during fetal development.  More so genetics and evironmental factors.

Dunno if it’s true I think I read it in New Scientist. It's related to something to do with how many older brothers you have 'n stuff... I'll see if I can find something online: http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn6564 here is something similar but its not the article I read. Obviously it's not science fact coming from a mag [;)].

i've heard that the reason that men are so bad at multi-tasking [:p] is simply because they have fewer (but stronger) connections between the left and right halves of the brain. anyone know if that is true?[?]
