Why do dogs sniff other dogs bums?

Hi Paul the dogs sniff each others bums so that they can recognise a familiar dog in the others territory and cats
sniff each others noses at least my cats do that.

It is these animals way of recognition like we recognise people by faces, clothes and speech patterns.

Rosalind Franklin was my first cousin and one my life's main regrets is that I never met this brilliant and beautiful lady.
She discovered the Single DNA Helix in 1953, then it was taken by Wilkins without her knowledge or agreeement.

Many years ago dogs roamed around during the day and at night they slept in caves.

One night the pack leader was fed so fed up with the smell in the cave that he held a meeting. He decreed that all the dogs from now on will leave their bums stacked outside the cave before entering for the night.

One nigh there was a big gale outside and all the bums got scattered and mixed up by the wind. The following day they saw what had happened and asked the pack leader what they should do as none were labeled. "Pick the first one you see and use that" he said and begrudgingly that's what they did.

Now all dogs go round smelling each others bums because they are searching for their own.

Possibly.. [:P] [;D]

    HEE HEE HEE..

I believe thats how they get to know each other.. The dog whisperer says to hold your dogface facing you so he can not turn his head or snap at another dog, (if your dog has a tendency to be aggressive with other dogs.. alow the other dog to thoroughly sniff out your dog it makes them feel less apprehensive or something maybe less aggressive towards another dog... something like that.. Its kinda how they introduce themselves!

That's right - the anal glands, either side of the lower rectum, secrete a protein that is relatively recognisable to other dogs; that's what they are checking. They can also detect it on the faeces of other dogs - to see if their mates are about.

Anal again, what is it with this forum and the bum region.

I think it is a doggy greeting as they can't say hello. I've heard one growl sausages once though.
Wouldn't it be ace if we did it instead of shaking hands.

You may have noticed that dogs not only sniff each others bums, they also lick their, ehem errrr well shall we say 'meat & 2 veg'.

I saw a dog doing this in a pub one night and said to the owner, "I wish I could do that." The owner said "Give him a packet of cookies and he might let you"
