What's the ratio of life between sea and land ?
« on: 31/01/2005 11:25:20 »
As I closed my eyes and started my adventure to find the holy grail called sleep this morning, this thought sprang into my head.

Is there more life beneath the sea than above it ? This applies to flora and fauna of all types. I know we fish the sea but in the grand scheme of things would this have an effect on the ratio of life between the two ?

I’m also aware of the plankton and other numerous equally sized tiny life forms and also the fact that the seas cover two thirds/ three quarters of the earth and because of the vast diversity beneath the sea would this lead to a greater quantity of life? I think so.

Perhaps it’s a figure that is common knowledge if so please enlighten me, if not, your educated guestimates would brighten my day….or is this just one of those questions which is impossible to answer unless strict guidelines are implemented to reach a conclusion?

I don’t know if I should be asking for just sheer numbers or mass….both would be nice….I’m not asking for much am I?

Thanks…Have a great day !

The sea wins without a doubt! The most abundant animal ever (possibly im kinda guessing [:D]) are deep sea, sea urchins that roam around eating detritus (rain of the sea) that falls to the bottom. Biomass wise im not sure??? I imagine the sea again as there is far more single celled or plankton.

I'dd say that not only sea is probably filled with more life than earth, it will probably last longer in water than outside... If human kind doesn't kill life possibility in sea with a polluant X...

I was gonna say sea.... because planctom and other small invertibrates make up so much biomass....  and the sea is SO huge..... but then I remember learning what a huge % of the sea is absolutely lifeless....  I think I may have to put my $$ on land.

Great Mayo !!...now you got me thinking..........

You would have thought that some where, some time, some one may have done a study eh ? your statement seems quite plausible.....

Gosh, I wonder if the source where you got that info about life in the sea, also had relevant 'land' data too ?

what about numbers of species as opposed to just biomass? I would guess there would be more species on land, because I think there is probably a greater range of different habitats on land than in water.

Yeh but there is deep sea and stuff, plus life came from the sea and it's more stable, so when there was mass extinction on land more species remained in the sea. I would put £££'s on the ocean having way more species.

Just seen this on BBC news, the main story is in nature, but here's the BBC link

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4291571.stm

so could be that the sea wins?

ok, here's a question.  if they are underground under the sea, do the count as marine or terestrial?  OR is underground in general a third category all its own?
