Now, as far as I can remember I have ALWAYS used my teeth to cut the tape ..I'm quite adept at it !...but , I have been told recently that it is in fact bad for my teeth !...how so ?...is this the tooth truth ?

If so, WHY is cutting sticky tape with my teeth baaaaad ?

Enlighten me with your tooth-tape orientated answers to fulfill my desire to seek out new answers, to boldly go where no tooth-question has gone before !

I can't see how it's bad for the teeth, but it can be a problem if you have a furry face.

Thanks Paul

I am beginning to think the teeth thing must be a modern old wives tale ( is that an oxymoron ?)....

Scotch tape is only  like 1/2 inch to 1 inch wide.. that looks more like packaging tape That Neil has there!

Although I am sure that SCOTCH must make wide packaging tape also... But we generally refer to SCOTCH tape as the small narrow roll of tape ..both plain double stick or clear!

Duct tape is more effective than Ritalin  [:)] ...

Teacher Quits After Duct-Taping Student To Desk

ORAN, Missouri - A teacher resigned last month after duct-taping a misbehaving 14-year-old to his desk and covering his mouth with tape, the school superintendent said Wednesday.

The parents of Tommy Brindley said the boy nearly suffocated on Feb. 19 before freeing himself about 15 minutes later at the elementary-middle school in Oran, a town of about 1,000 residents 120 miles south of St. Louis.

Tommy was in detention for being late to school three times, said his father, Larry Brindley. He began acting up during detention.

“He has attention deficit disorder, and he was misbehaving,” Brindley said. “He had some kind of a sponge and was throwing it. He wasn't being mean. He was just being ornery.”

The teacher, a 21-year veteran of the district, “just kind of snapped,” Brindley said.

Superintendent Tom Anderson said the teacher, whose name was not released, directed two other students to help her tape Tommy to his desk.

Re: original question

tearing tape with teeth could damage dental work...

Quote
Veneers can last for several years but they can be damaged just like normal teeth due to an accident, break or chip.
The edge of a veneer may be fragile, so you should try not to bite your nails or tear sticky tape with your teeth.

Perhaps the X-rays emitted when you unroll the tape are irradiating your mouth?

Correlation between nanosecond X-ray flashes and stick–slip friction in peeling tape

Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of California, Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California 90095, USA

Relative motion between two contacting surfaces can produce visible light, called triboluminescence. This concentration of diffuse mechanical energy into electromagnetic radiation has previously been observed to extend even to X-ray energies. Here we report that peeling common adhesive tape in a moderate vacuum produces radio and visible emission, along with nanosecond, 100-mW X-ray pulses that are correlated with stick–slip peeling events. For the observed 15-keV peak in X-ray energy, various models, give a competing picture of the discharge process, with the length of the gap between the separating faces of the tape being 30 or 300 um at the moment of emission. The intensity of X-ray triboluminescence allowed us to use it as a source for X-ray imaging. The limits on energies and flash widths that can be achieved are beyond current theories of tribology.
http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v455/n7216/abs/nature07378.html?lang=en

I doubt these X-rays pose a health risk: 100mW for a nanosecond is 0.000000001 of a Joule.

I am sure cutting the tape with your teeth once or twice is ok. However, think about the severity the synthetic material has on your enamel (?) If it was something digestible, such as food, then chew on. Even chewing over a period of time, you can see the smoothness of your teeth. I have certainly noticed mine !!

Unfortunately most of us do not just stop at cutting the cellphone tape once or twice. We probably end up cutting of strings and sometimes wire using our teeth when there is no cutter handy ...

Teeth need caring just as much as other part of your body  [;)] [;)]

Why do you think the fact that it's synthetic has anything to do with it?
