I'd swear it looks like there is a gargoyle on the back of my dog's bag of food.

RD, that sine-wave speech is pretty cool.

I believe it is similar to what people with a cochlear implant "hear".

Well, I do all the time and this phenomenon is called "Pareidolia". It is the ability of the mind to make patterns from random "noise", such as seeing faces in the fronts of cars by the way the headlights and grill are situated. Also, with something like this  :-)  smiley face. This happens not only with visual stimuli, but with sounds too - sometimes you may think that you have heard a voice, but in fact it was the result of a mixture of sounds and/or harmonics that your brain translates as something more recognisable. This ability to "see" patterns in otherwise random structures can be seen as an evolutionary advantage - those that spotted the predator in the jungle (the face in the random noise) were more likely to have survived than those that didn't.

My favourite pareidolia effect can be seen on Google Earth (which I'm assuming that you already have and am therefore not advertising for it). Just put in these coordinates, and tell me what you see!

50° 0'38.20"N 110° 6'48.32"W

Post up your own pareidolia photos and favourites - there are plenty around - just look in your burger bun!

It happens to me on a daily basis - but i never knew there was an atual scientific name for it.

Good post!

I had Elvis in my glitter tray once or was it Jesus? I'll try and fine the photo I took.

I've done it all my life. I used to sit for hours on the toilet in my Mums house as the floor tiles were strangely patterned and you could find many different faces if you looked at them differently. I heard that babies are predisposed to focus on facial features in order to recognise Mum and safe people. I guess some of us never stop doing it. When the light shines in my bathroom window the sun and shade make Brian Blessed appear. What fun!

Does this also explain why sometimes when I hear a loud noise and my eyes are closed I see a flash of white light?

That sounds like phosphenes (not pareidolia) ...

Quote
A phosphene is an entoptic phenomenon characterized by the experience of seeing light without light actually entering the eye. Phosphenes are flashes of light, often associated with optic neuritis, induced by movement or sound

or possibly synesthesia.
