Yes, they serve a gaurantee with their software because of money exchanged for their product. Open source and freeware can be(and hopefully not) a little faulty on points of consumer protection and indemnity of the developer.

Wish I had known Windows indemnified the loss of a complete book I had written that vanished due to a black hole in microsoft back up programme on windows 98. Maybe they could have re written it for me?

Its not as though Linux doesn't fail, Linux would be in more social trouble and less economically accusable fault than windows.
Backup software is notorious for those problems anyhow:
read this thread in a great linux forum i found:

I'm not saying Linux doesn't fail, just that I've had no trouble with it. I have, though, had quite a few problems with Windows.

98 was much more stable than 95 but less stable than NT4.
I switched to Me when it came out and it was as stable as NT4 of which 2000 varieties were more stable again.
I first used Mandrake7 around the time i had 95 and then Me and started to prefer Linux but that the compatibilities for obtainance of programs were difficult to find for both Win and Linux.
Mandrake10(Bamboo i think it was 10 it may be 9) had some serious problems and did Mandrake9(not so much).
It has tempted me to put the M7 back in and put in a new Kernel core but the other apps i require a compiler libraries for both C and Java and also XML SGML libraries plus various other dependencies.
So i'm staying with Slackware 10.1 until i get a higher frequency box.
Vista stuff i tried is OK and so is the Mac in various cafe's around where i live.Stable enough.

I use Ubuntu Studio and so far it has worked perfectly well apart from 1 instance of it hanging during a disk check.

I have been using Windows 7 7000 since the new year and have yet to see a BSOD or any serious problem, it has drivers for all my old peripherals such as a Laserjet printer and a HP4C scanner the only problems are with WxToImg and EGG bank accounts but these can be worked around.
It is readily available from torrents and an official version will be available to the first 2.5 million from 9/1/09 and of course its free up until August

syhprum - how do you think it compares so far with XP & Vista Home Premium? I appreciate it's a beta(?) release so comparisons could be a bit unfair as of yet; but what are your initial impressions?

I have got really used to it now and are seldom tempted to go back to XP, it starts up really fast, there are a few minor problems but it is very free from crashes.
I have not found any program that runs on XP that will not run on it even 16 bit ones.
I will try as soon as possible to run some that are a disaster on XP such as the software for my VIVATAR camera which crashes XP and the Magic video converter board that does likewise but this silly new motherboard that I just purchased has only two slots and they are both in use at the moment.
I have tried various flavours of Linux such as SUSE 11.0 but none will let me get into my EGG account which I need to manage my rather complex finances.
I would like to run a 64 bit version but one can never find drivers although I have Driver Detective which I swear by.

I wonder why you can't access EGG on Linux. Someone on another site I use said that those sort of sites use asp or python quite extensively but they should both work fine with Linux.
I use a few forums dedicated to Linux so I'll see if anyone has posted about problems like yours.

I read a review of W7 7000 and it sounds a lot better than Vista - quicker to install, runs faster, and more drivers. I don't think I'll swap back from Linux to MS, though, even if it is free as Linux is so good for the development work I do (php/mySQL mainly). All my peripherals work fine with it too, so unless W7 7000 is better for development (which I doubt) there's no incentive for me to change.

What's absolutely best with Linux is its 'open source code'.
It's very hard to hide databases collecting private information in Linux.
Too many that checks it out.

I think EGG needs Internet Explorer, and that means Windows, no way around that. As for Windows 7... most likely the EGG page checks for the IE version and the newest/beta version in Windows 7 isn't yet in the list.

I would be very surprised if a site like EGG can only be used with IE.

The site itself seems fine, but I just looked around and found:

"All you need to run Egg Money Manager is a PC with Internet Explorer 6 or higher" [:o] [:(] [:(!] [V]
I guess it uses an ActiveX application. I haven't tried yet to run IE in a Wine environment. The only other option I can think of is getting VMware and running Windows in there. (Did I mention that I LOVE VMware?)

Makes you wonder for sure. Why not use Java or a php application or something else that's independent of an OS? I can't think of anything that absolutely needs Microsoft based programming.

The only times I've ever used Active-X is in in-house browser-based applications when I want to open Word documents or spreadsheets from within the browser.

I've nabbed me a copy of Windows 7 (I'm one of the 2.5 million) - I haven't decided whether to stick it on an old pc that barely has the spec to run it, or partition off a section of the newer pc... Either way, I'll let you know how it handles things.

Windows 7 is now up to version 7057 as is definitely Superior to either Vista or XP and I can see no reason to use any other OS (except for EGG bank accounts for the moment)
