Whenever anybody leaves a dog alone in the car, they always sit in the drivers seat, why is that?

The dog will never be aloud in the drivers seat when the car is moving and the seat will be the most cramped (for a dog).

Being pack animals, I should think this is an attempt to mimic the top dog and as JnA says, it would be the place where the top dog's scent is the strongest.

They don't always favour the the driver's seat. Our first dog (collie x saluki) always did but present dog (collie x GSD) never has done.

In Genral, i suppose if you weigh up the bond to the owner, the level it feels it sees itself in the household, and who was in the drivers seat when they leaved the car; it makes for it being territoriality by pack bond instinct.
The definite point is that “the controller” and “the totem seat placement” are synonymous to the territory and the pack in a public place the vehicle is in among strangers.
For the dog that does not sit in the drivers seat, if this is natural and not teached then its likely a female dog in my mind.

Genrally, its memorially, "DA SEE'IT O' BAAAHZZ"(i think i spelled this right).
They also tend to bark defensively and chase you around window to window if you walk the perimeter of the car.
note: i object to some spelling arrangements of the english language.
it should be pronounced unlike its logical spelling to have the spoken effect but not disrupt logic.
