Anyone Try Music Therapy
« on: 29/03/2005 01:24:27 »
I absolutely refuse to take drugs for stress, and my massage therapist recommended that I try music therapy as an alternative.  Basically, she suggested that I find a comfortable spot in my house, turn on a relaxing CD, and dim the lights.  Personally, I go crazy when I'm not doing anything for more than 5 minutes at a time....has anyone else tried this?

She recommended that I listen to this CD called "Earthsongs" by the group Secret Garden as well (I found a sample at Universal's website, but only for two of the songs).  She was playing one of their CDs at my session last Thursday and I really liked it.  Wondering if anyone else can recommend a particular CD of theirs for music therapy sessions, or for just plain enjoyment.

???

Hi Tabatha,

Welcome to the site.

There's an Austrian chappy who goes by the name of Gandalf,(not to be confused with a group of the same name) I have a few of his Cd's, one in particular is called From Source To Sea and it's not only very enjoyable but a wonderful de-stresser. He's very much in the vein of fantasy type music, filled with ambiant layered synths and syphonic tapestrys and landscapes. Not too sure if you can get it in the states....(hang on !!......2 mins later).....I did post here a link to AMAZON, but when testing it, it failed to work....anyway, go to amazon .com...type in GANDALF under Popular Music and see what comes up !! I can't see ' From Source To Sea there  (that's a real shame , it's an exquisitely beautiful cd)...but there are many others ..........failing that, there are many discs you can buy from any new-age store and also you could consider various sounds of nature Cd's..ie: whale song, a  thunderstorm, rainfall, birdsong etc.......good luck....try and relax !!

Your brain is very much in tune with the oscillations of sound waves and magnetic and electrical fields.  Relaxing music in a quiet, safe area is a fantastic stress reliever.  If it works for you consistently, I say go with it.  There are even CDs designed to emit certain subharmonic tones that supposedly stimulate the brainwave state of relaxing.  I can't say wether they really work or not as I don't have access to an EEG but the hypothesis is sound.  Either way the music is relaxing.

What I should have mentioned about Gandalf is that he plays all the instruments himself from pan pipes to strings to percussion......and he's not all synths, his music is backed up by synths.....and I'm sure Synth music thinks Dave Douglas is crap too.....

Santi2c, you've got to get yourself some social skills, cos your hostile attitude pisses me off,....perhaps you should follow your own advice and chill out a bit...how can you say music with synths is fake and insincere ?...you just don't go deep enough, and I'm sick of your friggin generalisations !!...don't knock it till you've tried it.....exactly which Gandalf albums have you heard ?

why is a negative opinion so frowned upon?

I'll answer the rest in detail later, but it's not the fact that your entitled to your own opinion (which of course you are, and I'll defend your right to voice your opinion)...it's just the language you use....you were commenting on my post, and you could have been a little more diplomatic that's all......

Negative opinions are NOT frowned upon, but when you blatantly say something is crap without hearing it,then you should have backed it up ,that in this case you were NOT commenting on my recommendation, but you must have been responding partly to it, else why mention synth music ?

and I'm not insulting you, but your arrogant use of language comes over as insulting and you do come over quite antagonistic sometimes.....in MY opinion.

Maybe we all need some music therapy, laugh, I can be even worse when I'm stressed out.

Thanks for the suggestions, and I'm glad that you guys worked everything out.  I really don't listen to much synth music myself, at least I don't think it has synths on it.  I love jazz, especially Dave Brubeck, but it really works me up, which is good sometimes, but when I'm trying to relax, not good.  The Secret Garden CD I heard was very non-abrasive and just flowed, I think are the instruments were natural sounds.  I'll check out Gandalf and Dave Douglas though -- see you guys around the forum.

Alright you guys, I have enjoyed this little disagreement and actually made me smile in delight .
Tabitha and Neil. I have this Cd I purchased a while back called
Dan Gibsons SOLITUDES, exploring nature with music. Ironically, "The English Country Garden." I think that it is quite beautiful and very relaxing. It's mellow and quite nice with the little birds in the background of the music as well as water and other small creatures. Quite lovely indeed! There are 9 tracks, approx. a bit over 55 minutes long. Neil I think you might like it. You too Tabitha. Santi2 You might find it calming also. I love many types of music for relaxation, but this is very nice. I know I am a couple weeks late for this conversation, but felt that this Cd might be nice for you also.
