Once it has started bleeding, what ways can you stop it? I usually just get two fingers and apply pressure at the top of the nose, just a bit below the eyes and try not to tip my head. Anyone else know other methods?
How about things that you can eat/drink to stop them starting in the first place!  []

I stick a rolled up piece of tissue up my hooter for a few mins. Looks a bit like Mr Bean, but it works for me.

Often, not really. It just seems to be in summer when it is really hot and when I get a bit dehydrated. I had one the other day and it is the first one since last summer, so I was a bit worried that they'll keep coming back but so far its just been the once. [] It usually happens around sleeping time, usually when I get up, or before I go to bed and a few years back, even in the middle of the night when I was going to the bathroom, that was a bit annoying to say the least  [!] [!] [!]. But I am keeping my fluids high and eating carefully, I was just wondering if anyone had any complementary medicine thay had cooked up themselves!  [] [] []

It sounds as though it might be linked to blood pressure, for example, when you wake up, your blood pressure is increasing. Also, when under strain, your blood pressure increases locally, and in the head, hence the red-cheeks (on your head!). Perhaps some of the blood vessels in your nose are slightly thinner than usual, and rupture when your BP increases? However - this is merely speculation from a non GP! It may be worth getting it checked. Have you ever broken your nose?

Why would you want to seek complementary medicine?

Not complementary medicine as such, but the traditional Chinese medicine that I took a few years ago worked wonders. Don't know if anyone else has had the problem though...

Unfortunately, "traditional Chinese medicine" falls into the "Argument from tradition" logical fallacy. This does not mean that it doesn't work, but caution should be the watchword.

If you have it checked by a trained GP, or better yet, an ENT (Ear Nose and Throat) specialist, you may not need any medicine at all...

Dentstudent is correct. This sounds like a blood pressure problem. You really MUST go to the GP. It might just be a thin skin problem that means as soon as your blood pressure rises the veins in your nose near the skin surface break through the skin. This is something that should be sorted.

Sorry I did not see this sooner.. The way we were taught to do this for our health and safety training from blue cross is to sit down pinch the nose closed put your elbows on your knees and lean your head down forward with nose closed. This is supposed to allow the blood to form a clot and stop the bleeding!

Yeah.. I thought it was weird to but by Joe it does the trick....I do a training every year for adults and children and that has been the newest one the books for the last couple years!

I've always just tipped my head back, which seems to stop it.

Heard that taking low-dose aspirin on a regular basis can cause nose bleeds.
