I used to be an operational paramedic in the defense force and we were taught a few options for stopping bleeding noses. If you have any ice around you can put it on the back of your neck which in theory causes the arteries to constrict and should start to stem the blood flow and  the same applies to the forehead. The direct pressure helps but due to the fact that blood clots are formed better with contact to air and when it does not have huge pressure behind it keeping it flowing, a common easy fix for the run of the mill blood nose is to grab a tissue, and actually blw the nostril clear as you breath out and the close the other nostril and breath in through the bleeding one which forces a lot of air through the nostril and assists the blood to form a scab. This sounds gross but has worked very quickly and successfully on many occassions.
