A Bra is a large garment and the CONTINUOUS pressure over the long term promotes cancer induction.

Studies show that this is a very real possibility. The reason is that regularly wearing a bra prevents lymph drainage and circulation, which can greatly increase the possibility of developing breast cancer.

The lymphatic and circulatory systems are responsible for both delivering vital nutrients and clearing out toxins. When the body does not have access to nutrients or when it is under the attack of toxins, cancer may develop.

A study published in the European Journal of Cancer studied factors for breast cancer such as breast size and handedness. They discovered that premenopausal women who do not wear bras are less than half as likely to get breast cancer that those who regularly wear a bra. A study conducted by researcher David Moth revealed that even the lightest bras place pressure on the lymphatic system.

Other research published in Chronobiology International in 2000 discovered that regular bra wearing decreases the production of melatonin, which is a potent natural antioxidant.


It may be interesting to note that a very small proportion of men do develop breast cancer, exactly the same amount as women who go braless.

Also zero mention in the mainstream media showing the endemic corruption of the press.

It could just be a ploy to encourage women to go out without their Braziers. I'll suggest it to my bitch in the morning.

A lot of this smarts of somebody using facts to back up an arguement...that never works here.

They can't just tell women to walk around without a bra! So what are they suggesting then?

Not that I have personal experience of this, but I gather that not wearing a bra, especially when exercising or running for the bus and even just walking fast can be somewhat uncomfortable and can result in saggy breasts. These are particular problems for those women whom are 'well endowed'.

The vast majority of women do not want saggy breasts (I don't want them to have saggy boobs either!) So as chemisrty4me asked, what is the alternative? No good coming up with claims such as this unless you have a remedy for the problem. We can all find problems everywhere we look, the smart trick is finding solutions.

The whole thing sounds a bit alarmist to me. Esp. when we read the whole abstract of one study you mentioned:

Data for 3918 cases and 11,712 controls from 7 centres were used to examine the association of handedness with laterality of breast cancer; data for 2325 cases and 7008 controls from 4 centres were used to assess the relation of bra cup size to breast cancer risk. There was a suggestive (P about 0.10) association of handedness with breast cancer laterality: odds ratio of a left-handed (or ambidextrous) woman having a left-sided cancer 1.22 (95% CI 0.96-1.56). Handedness may affect the lateral occurrence of breast cancer, although this tumour is in general more common in the left breast, possibly because this breast is usually slightly larger. Premenopausal women who do not wear bras had half the risk of breast cancer compared with bra users (P about 0.09), possibly because they are thinner and likely to have smaller breasts. Among bra users, larger cup size was associated with an increased risk of breast cancer (P about 0.026), although the association was found only among postmenopausal women and was accounted for, in part, by obesity. These data suggest that bra cup size (and conceivably mammary gland size) may be a risk factor for breast cancer."

The other study about melatonin was done with just 10 younger women. "The results suggest that skin pressure by clothing could markedly suppress the nocturnal elevation of salivary melatonin, resulting in an increase of rectal temperature. (Chronobiology International, 17(6) 783-793, 2000)"

It is essential to wear the correct size bra. You should get your bra size checked every six months and change your bras accordingly. I don't think wearing a bra is the problem but wearing the wrong sized bra definitely could be.

The blue colour has, of course, nothing to do with lymphatic circulation.

Indeed, and since it distributes such force as it provides over a large area the pressure is correspondingly small.

Incidentally, trousers are also a large garment- take them off at once- and your other clothes, just to be on the "safe" side.

Again, an assertion with no evidence. Just repeating something doesn't make it true.

The laws of logic say it is possible, but that's a long way from saying it's true.

Hang on, how can you say what the reason for something is until you have showed that the thing is actually true.

Good God! something that's actually true.
Incidentally you can tell when tissue doesn't get an adequate supply of blood- the result is gangrene. Last time I checked nobody was saying bras caused gangrene.

and when it does have access to nutrients and adequate lymphatic drainage cancer may also develop.
So what?

The study pointed out that the likely reason for the correlation was obesity as a confounding factor.
Women with small breasts are likely to not wear a bra. No great shock there.
They are also likely not to be overweight- again, no surprise.
Since cancer (in particular breast cancer) is associated with being overweight you should expect it to be less common in women who don't wear bras.

So what- there's still no evidence of a direct link between bras and cancer.

If I remember rightly a recent study showed that giving anti oxidants to smokers raised their risk of cancer. Perhaps bras are helping women avoid this problem.

Actually, I'd be a bit surprised if the risk of me getting breast cancer wasn't increased by me wearing a bra.  But then I'm a man.
