simple one letter shift will reveal all,

HAL comes in just ahead of that other company.

Correct !!...yep..that was a simple one !  When interviewed about it Arthur C Clarke insisted it was just a coincidence. Well done damocles.  [:)]

I don't get it. How does that spell D E C ?

Wow! Let me see if I have this right. You're saying Gene Roddenberry actually anticipated the formation of GZR Computers and Venetian Blinds which was only incorporated last Tuesday?

So...
How did HAL become inserted as a critical, and sometimes problematic component of MS Windows a few decades later?

I would never say that! Gene Roddenberry was off thinking about Star Trek at the time.

This may or may not be the answer in terms of the queen's English, but we Aussies see it as a feature of North American English that "any noun can be verbed" (and vice versa).
-------

One other feature that may or may not be relevant is that each of these words has just one vowel per syllable (Unlike words like foot, rose, dear, greasy). But that is not an uncommon property -- the cat sat on the hat has all words of this sort. I suspect (hope) that there is a deeper and more subtle answer.

Blame it on the Americans....

So...
One can "hoof it to town."
"Don't horse around"
"One can dog someone until they give in".
"Boot him out of the house!!!"
"Let's table the motion for now."

In many cases, though, one must change the words somewhat to make them into a verb, for example "Americanizing words".

Is there a verb "koala-ing" ?, if there is it should be a synonym for slacking [:)] ...
