I've just wondered why motorcar accident victims always loose their shoes when hit by a car crossing the road?

If you're hit by a car when your foot is in contact with the ground then you get friction between the shoe and the road as the vehicle pushes your leg sideways, so the shoe tends to get more or less scraped off the foot by road.

You'll normally end up with a broken leg as well, and/or a shattered knee.

If you know you're going to get hit- get the heck out of the way; failing that, jump up just before you are hit; you do NOT want your foot on the ground at impact under any circumstances.

Nah. Usually just broken leg and shattered knees. Most car bumpers aren't sharp enough to do that. Still, they might have to amputate.
