Why are there subtitles stuck on my TV screen?
« on: 23/02/2009 21:33:07 »
I have connected an old analogue CRT 34cm colour TV to a digital set top box.

The picture has been normal for several days. The image froze when* I was trying to

remove subtitles from the screen (*this may be unrelated)

The same image and subtitles are now there permanently in colour - no other image

appears when channels are changed but the current sound for this channel and any

other channel can be heard ! Is this image sticking? I've never heard of it in

colour before. Is this related to the old/new technologies being mixed?

It most probably was related.  It's possible for the two things to happen coincidentally of course, but it's much more probable that something happened because of something being done.

It's very curious that the image is still being displayed as I doubt that the CRT TV has a frame-buffer in which to hold the image (could be wrong though - I've not had a TV for thirty years and so haven't bothered learning much about the current state of the art).  The image must be coming from somewhere in your system though.

I've not heard of 'image sticking' before; do you mean 'image burn-in'?  This is a different phenomenon and is rarely seen on colour CRTs, which incorporate a 'mask'.

Thanks for your thoughts LeeE - I'll look into this further - this happened at my parent's place - I was there but didn't have time to isolate the TV or experiment much.

Not due to mixing old/new technologies.
Some digital TV boxes have a "freeze" frame button on the remote control, you may have you pressed it accidentally when trying to remove subtitles. Pressing the "freeze" button again should get rid of the captured frame. The digiTV boxes can sometimes crash, this can also freeze the picture, to cure this (all together now) "switch it off and back on again".
