why is belly button fluff always blue?
« on: 15/05/2005 17:46:52 »
We did different experiments with different colour clothes, different fabric, clothes worn for different length of time, etc but the belly button fluff is always blue. Does anyone know the answer?

....now I must tell you !!....but this is just between me and you ok ?...for the last ten years I have been collecting belly button fluff (My own that is)...and I can honestly say that I hold the world record, cos I've seen the official world record and it pales into significance when comparted to mine. I may post a piccy of it too...but, to answer your question, although my ball of tummy fluff joy is primarily blue it is in fact a compilation of a whole rainbow or colours...but....I must admit, until you posed this very important question, I never really took in on board that in fact YES, it is mostly blue...nicely done....and welcome to the forum too cool dude......sooooooooo glad I got that off my chest and at least I have now been able to share my secret with you.............DOH !!

Maybe it's sad that it's no longer part of the fabric whence it came?

this is so cool - that there are people who actually read my question and not die from laughing! However, I still need to know why it is blue, regardless of the colour of clothes worn.  In fact, I might even be right that it is mostly on men and not women. I think it's to do with the chest hair, but I might be wrong.

That looks like a fruit and nut ball gone very bad. But it's interesting colours in it and one can see that it is primarily blue. Ah of course, we haven't done experiment looking at colour of fluff vs colour of food we eat.

That would be the obvious answer but science being as it is, my various experiments with different colour clothes made no difference. Still waiting for an answer.

Ahh, I know - it's because fluff is trans-dimensional and the movement through those other dimesnsions causes it to blue-shift. QED! heh

is it anything to do with the base colour of fabric before it is dyed? maybe the dye comes off somehow when the fibres are exposed to the warm damp conditions of the belly button?

I can't think of any fabrics that have a blue base-colour

a lot of dyes have blue in there, definately black is made up with a lot of blue, maybe this is the dye that sticks most to the fluff, and the other colour constituents of the dye wash away. A lot of people wear a lot of black, and denim is already blue, and most people wear a lot of that too.

Obviously natural materials won't be blue, e.g. cotton and wool, but I can't remember if man made fibres are coloured or not, so I'm not going to say much more.
