A Man. It's the Riddle of the Sphinx, which features in the story of Oedipus... it is as a reward for answering the riddle correctly and so ridding Thebes of the Sphinx that Oedipus is granted the hand of Jocasta, Queen of Thebes, and becomes Oedipus Rex. All very nice, except for her being his mother. Oops.
Four legs = crawling infant (in the morning of its life and all that stuff)
Two legs = well, two legs, like it says
Three legs = old person with a stick to supplement the two legs it had in the afternoon
