Im sure this has happened to you, it happens to me all the time.

You hear the phone ring
You are a bit far away so you make a dash to find it
As you are about a send away from answering it, it stops
(OR) You answer it only to find a dial tone...


any ideas?

Perhaps the ringing that you hear is not from an external source...

And what about people phoning to ask stupid question?

I came home from work unexpectedly early last Wednesday and as I walked through the door the phone was ringing and I answered it. Some jerk on the other end asked “Is the coast clear?“ How the bleedin' hell should I know? What am I, a weatherman?

It was a particularly annoying interuption because as it happens my wife had got all naked just in case I finished work early.

I also think the phone ceasing to ring just as you are about to pick it up is the proof of Sod's Law, an under-researched phenomena which affects most people at some point, but others, like myself suffer from it all the time.
