When you put that they're sponge-backed, it got me thinking. Sponge backing is typically used to absorb shock, cut down on vibration, or prevent slipping. Do they maybe go under speakers?

YES !!

But only for a very specific reason. To protect nice wooden floors from the Spikes screwed into the underneath of speakers to fix them in place and so disperse the energy through the cones instead of through the cabinet !...same applies to smaller speakers on speaker stands which also have spikes.....sorry for the anticlimatic answer....still love me ?

If your floor is carpeted then you don't need them..they are purely to protect nice wooden floors from speaker spikes, which make nice holes !!
