Why do people believe in horoscopes?
« on: 05/06/2009 21:30:02 »
Claudia Bullion  asked the Naked Scientists:
   Hi guys:
I've been listening to your podcast from Barcelona for the past couple of years and I love it, you're definitely on my top 3 list,

I have a question:

I don't believe in horoscopes and such things and when people ask me what is my star or my zodiac sign I always answer that the horoscopes doesn't apply to me because I was born in Argentina. I usually got puzzled looks and what I mean is that as we can see different stars and constellations in the southern hemisphere and that the "logic" behind the horoscope is that the stars above you in the time you were born will mark your destiny, surely then people that was born under different stars and constellations should have different stars signs that are not yet on the list with the official 12 signs.

Is this accurate? Should I say that I'm a "southern cross" sign instead of a Virgo? (I was born in September) or, as with the seasons should I have the exact opposite whatever that is?

Or, instead of confronting people with the absurdity of the horoscopes, should I tell them that the gravitational pull of the nurse nearby caused more impact in their destiny?

I apologise for my English as this is not my first language and thank you very much in advance!!

keep on the great work

Claudia B.

I think the whole thing is absolute poppy-cock.

According to astrology there should be 12 types of people with of the 12 groups having the same thing happening to them. I have yet to meet two people who are the same as each other. Friends of mine who are identical twins are different characters! How does astrology explain that!

I think they are entertained by the predictions. Those who believe it maybe have some frustrations in life.
