Castor oil is considered safe in proper doses for conventional uses as a laxative. However, side effects can include abdominal pain or cramping, colic, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea... Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding should not use castor oil, nor should people with intestinal blockage, acute inflammatory intestinal disease, appendicitis, or abdominal pain.

THANK EWE RD for this valuable relevance

I'm with RD.. I think castor oil has more nasty side effects than goodness. Personally I wouldn't put my child through that potential.
Do you guys not have a poisons information line you can ring?  or a parenting helpline? Although I suspect it will just work its way through the system, I'd still be taking him to see a GP when you can. (just to be sure)  it's probably not an emergency case (unless he starts having difficulty breathing) but maybe a check to reassure yourself from a real doctor. (anyways that's what I would do though we have medicare here and other stuff to help)

Thank Jna Your advice is greatly appreciated. I have stepped away from the Castor oil. NHS direct did eventually ring back and the doctor said that (like ewe mentioned) unless he has some difficulty which he feels will not occur then there is very little to worry about. However, it's now Monday morning and as far as we can tell he has not passed it. It erhmm..has not been fun...digging around for the ball...however he is a once a day lad and now he is back at nursery. We are having some doubts as to whether he really did swallow it. I was not there. he was playing with it and then wifey turned around to see him do a swallowing motion and there was no sign of the ball..there is still no sign of the ball anywhere !  I suspect we will still take him to get X-rayd...as ewe say...for peace of mind.

Hi Neil. It must be catching. My little 5 year old girl swallowed a wishbone shaped plastic hair clip (looks like wishbone legs with feet on the ends of each wishbone leg) from the toy Girl's World. Apparently it hurt going down the throat but once in the stomach she said she was OK. Obviously we went to A&E on Saturday evening as soon as it happened. It's seethrough plastic so didn't show on X-Ray. Do you think the due to its shape it may get lodged in the intestine or not make it out of the Pyloric Sphincter? She seems fine 24 hours later. No sign of it yet, how long does something like this take to go through the human body? Blimey, kids scare the begeezers out of you sometimes!

Hi Ellie,

Gosh have your daughter and my son decided to perform as a duet ?
I am so sorry. Ewe must be worried sick. I wish I could give you some advice and would hope that the advice I have wonderfully received here helps ewe too. How  is she today ?..I bet she is fine. Please do let us know how she gets on and I would expect it to take anything from 24-48 hours !..maybe even longer considering simple small round ball has yet to appear out from my boys exit hole !!

Has this ball bearing put in an appearance yet, sheepy? Or are you up to your elbows in something unmentionable?

Had I been around at the time of this occurrence, I would have suggested that you refrain from feeding the boy brat on anything which might result in a rather aromatic end product.

Thanks Don...I am pleased to announce that whilst on the 3rd floor of a big shop my son stuck his backside out the window and did this:

Clearly his own poo poo has ' manured' the ball to ever so slightly larger proportions !

Fact is, he still has not shot the ball out of the cannon yet and like I have mentiond in my response to JnA, there are now a few doubts creeping in. We may have just jumped hastily to a wrong conclusion but the fact remains...the ball is now missing and he does have a tendency to stick things in his gob !

Congrats, Neil!  [;D]

I'm glad that everything went well. Sheesh kids, I sometimes feel they are all in a secret conspiracy just to scare their family. Makes me somewhat glad I don't have my own kids, but my great-nieces and nephews have been (and still are) making up for it.

Now we just have to wait for Ellie telling us the good news, I'm sure it'll be OK too.

I was actually going to create a new thread about that RD...but I gather the stomach acids de-chromed it !

good idea about the rings though !

we were thinking of mounting it on a plaque and saving it to show to his future wife and in-laws...i am sure he would be proud !!

On second thoughts you could have the ball’s unique de-chromed patina preserved for posterity by encapsulating it in clear resin,
 (like these paperweights).

So glad to hear the your son has given birth to a slightly de-chromed ball bearing, and congrats to the proud grandpappy.

Have you decided on a name for your latest family addition yet?
