My son did the same thing.
For a neat and un-fragrant way to search for a similar metallic object (it must beat least partly iron or steel to be attracted to magnets) try this.
1. Turn off the water on the toilet and flush to remove as much water as possible.
2. Lift up the lid and line the toilet bowl with a kitchen size trash bag, fold over the edges and put the seat back down.
3. Let them do their business.
4. Take the trash bag with its' "contents," fold up the top to keep the smell in. Flatten down the "contents" to about 1/4", then take a strong magnetic and slide it over the top of the "contents" until you find the metallic object.
It works like a piece of cake with something like a ball bearing.

I think you're lucky it was chromium-plated and not nickel-plated.
Nickel (if freshly cut nickel-foil against the skin is anything to go by) could make for unimaginably "itchy" insides which wouldn't bear thinking about.
