Is Treading my Treadmill A Law Of Diminishing Returns ?
« on: 27/07/2009 16:49:08 »
Dear Treadmillologists,

How are ewe today ?..well I hope !...It's sunny now !..it was cloudy a few minutes ago and before that it rained ...no doubt a few more seasons will have occurred before I finish this post.

Anyway, I'm so glad we had this chat !

For the last year (well..since June 02 2008) I have been treadmilling my way back to a modicum of fitness.

Look, here's my very excited Treadmill:

 [ Invalid Attachment ]
My Treadmill A Few Moments Ago

Naaa..I don't bother with a change of clothes, I just let the sweat dry out every day and I'm good for a whole week ! [;D]

Tomorrow I in fact break the 2000 mile barrier !!

My cousin mentioned to me that any exercise ewe do over an hour has little benefit !!...Is this true  ?..I can't see why !..I'm still exercising and burning calories  !

I think he meant to imply that it's akin to a law of diminishing  returns !...what do you think ?

If so..then I need to reevaluate my exercise schedule....I ususally do circa 100 minutes....occasionally much more...sometimes less ! Today I just did an hour.

If that is indeed true then I gather it's more beneficial to do two lots of one hour in a day rather than a single 2 hour set ?

Thank ewe for your kind consideration in this matter !

Hugs & shmishes

mwah mwah mwah.

2000 MILES!!!!!! WOW!!!!!!!

That is outstanding and incredible.. Neily Your feet must be tough as nails!

I am so Proud of how well you have done! I hope my trainer can help me get back into some kind of shape as far as muscle tone.. I don't want to be wonder woman and lift a school bus load of people, but I do relish being able to lift my coffee cup without my arm giving way and being able to walk efficiently to stay mobile and have some fun sight seeing!

Horray and keep up the good work!

By the way I have heard the same thing you mentioned that the hour of  real good work out is really sufficient ..because you need to raise your heart rate to a certain level for about a 20minute or so sustained work out in order to get your required cardio work out and really get the benefits to the heart and other muscles...! Maybe there is something to it! My trainer says a warm up and sustained twenty minutes and a warm down is what my goal should be at least 3 to 4 times a week!

I used to watch Eco Challenge when it was on Discovery. In that they always said that there are several types of muscle fibers. In the leg there are fibers that are specialized for short work and there are fibers that are activated through the course of a long exercise. These long working muscle fibers can work for hours without tiring, they use energy really efficiently.

Your must have a good set of these long working fibers by now, neilep.

Thanks Kareny Mam,

I am proud of myself !..though I have let my willpower subside a few times and I need to lose some weight again. My feet are fine actually. Remember when I had those massive blisters ?...all gone now.....my feet are as smooth as a babys bottom  [;)]..That's Smooth with a capital ' Smoo' !!

I've always had good legs as I was a keen sportssheep in my eweth.. [;)]...but ewe are right...my legs have developed very well indeed and it's really just my forcing myself to stop that stops me from just treadmilling all day.

Thansk again and welcome to the site

My treadmill broke! My son was using it and the belt stopped working properly! I am bummed and do not know how to fix it or if it is repairable!

Surely as a sheepy gamboling around pastures, looking mournful or scared is your preferred exercise?

However, I am lead to belive by my fitness fanatic brother (which I think is only one step removed from "a man down the pub said") that it all depends.

It depends on whether you are concerned about your cardio vascular fitness, your weight or your legs / walking endurance.
It depends on how fit you are to start with
It depends on how you use your treadmill - walking for an hour uses less energy than running
It depends on what you have eaten/ drunk - your body will tend to use sugars before fats before protein.

He reckons the optimal work rate for "fat burning" is when you exercise at around 60 - 70 % of your "maximum" heart rate.  Your maximum heart rate is apparently 220 minus (your age).

Last time I ask him a question!

Yes, and those high heels show them off to good advantage.
Nice calves (or are they lambs?)
