What makes the inside of beach pebbles sparkly??
« on: 28/07/2009 18:56:05 »
Hello rock-loving type people  [:)]

I've just got back from a beach walk with my little lad, among our 'treasures' we found were a few pebbles with a hole inside of them. The hole is sparkly and crystalized, I used to collect these stones when I was a child and I called them magic stones  [;)]

There seems to be no set type of rock( based on colour) that his happens to.

So, I want to know, what causes it and how it happens??

Thankyou muchly

The Pox

Geode ?

Ohhh they are pretty!!!

No they are not like that though, its literally just a pebble with a hole in it, many other like it on the beach, only some of them have a sparkly crystal bit in the hole. They are quite solid otherwise.

Probably just a mini vug with small quartz crystals inside. Calcite will also do this and a picture would help out.

**Edit** These are just the common ones and there are many other possibilities.

If you put the little stone in water do the crystals go away? If so, they are salt crystals.

Nope, just soakerd some and they have gone yet.

I thought this would be a common thing... hmmm. I cant get a decent pic either as the light wont bounce of the crystals properly..

While the photographic technology at your end of the chain might not be as good as you hope, I think you may be underestimating the technology at the viewing end.
There are some clever people here and the human visual system is jolly good at making out things from pictures that are not ideal.
Even a poor picture might answer the question.
If you can't get a decent picture feel free to post an indecent one -so to speak.

Is the "crystallized" area black and shiny?

If it isn't, get some HCL, dilute it, and throw it in there to see if it effervesces.

 [;D]

I'll send you a Jr. Geologist badge.
