What is up with dogs ????????????????????????????
« on: 25/09/2009 17:58:56 »
As some know, I just adopted a 9 year old Brittany Spaniel. There is a question that has been burning in my mind ever since I go my first dog, soon after wolves were tamed.

WHY DO DOGS PREFER TO DRINK FROM THE COMMODE RATHER THAN THEIR WATER BOWL ??????????

As this will surely raise a few silly remarks, probably including mine, I have put this in "Just Chat." But I would really like to know if there is a reasonable answer to this question out there some where.

By the way this is the dog that has caused such a profound question to be asked. She actually moves the tennis ball with her mental energies!

The water you put in their bowl is nice fresh tap water, yes?

With chlorides in, yes?

You would never put fish into fresh tap water and I never give my tortoises fresh tap water. The chlorides can strip essential mucus from gills and the mouth. I always boil water, then leave it to cool for my tortoises. Any water is favoured, by animals, to tap water.

There was a similar thread to this a short while ago.

The commode water comes from the same source as the tap water. So why is the toilet bowl preferred?

I will  look for the other thread.

Best guess it smells less 'clean' and is therefore more interesting to her.

I have a cat that likes to drink from the toilet. And neither of them like the water indoors, preferring to drink whater has collected outsitde, or licking the condensation of the glass in the morning.
Mine also like sitting on washing, dirty as well as clean, but given the choice they would prefer to sit on a rancid smelling laundry basket than a cat bed.

My Dear Mr. Geezer,

This is to inform you that all human beings do not live as you do - in a cabin, in the mountains amongst the wild boar, the bears, the mountain lions and the refuse of your own waste. We in Texas are much more civilized.

For example, we do have indoor plumbing, running water, and electricity. These items may be unknown to you, being raised in the wastes of Scotland as you were. We in America are much more civilized than the people you are accustomed to living among.

In the future, please refrain from commenting on on things about which you have not a clue. The rest of the civilized world has long since eschewed chamber pots.

Yours in Science,

James Rober

At least I do not wear a skirt. Girly-man!

The degree covers a hole that lets the breeze into my abode. It IS useful for something.

Re: original question.

Some animals apparently can "smell" water. With the toilet aerosol, after flush, (and perhaps shower/bath in the same room), there will be a stronger smell of water from the smallest room than from the dog's bowl.

You might put it to better use when you are at your commode  [;D]

I need the degree to legitimize the efforts of the mentalist dog, picture above. Now that I have proof of telekinesis thanks to RD and his magic compute, I am going to give lectures throughout the world.

By the way, this here piece of paper I got in the mail says  "Vinco Fimus Bovinis."

What that mean?

I'd go along with Variola's explanation for this:

Quote from: Variola on 25/09/2009 19:56:58
Best guess it smells less 'clean' and is therefore more interesting to her.

Also, if you are using a metal or plastic bowl, your dog may not like the smell. You may not be able to detect any odour, but a dog may. A glazed pot probably would not have any such odour.

Perhaps I could conduct a small experiment on your behalf.

1 x metal bowl filled with rain water
1 x plastic "     "     "    "    "
1 x ceramic "     "     "    "    "

Repeat the above using pre boiled tap water and again using fresh tap water.

ALL BOWLS TO BE IDENTICAL IN SHAPE SIZE AND COLOUR.

Since I don't have a dog, and watching the tortoises might unnecessarily prolong the experiment, I shall enrol the services of Mrs Don_1.

This experiment has had to be unexpectedly cancelled due to unforeseen problems with the active participant.

Cowardliness is the better part of valor.

So what does this say about all of us who use tap water? Are we going to die of chlorine poisoning? Or do we just get a little sodium and add it to our water?

Yet another reason to get out of Texas and move to Idaho!

We are on a community well. The water is untreated. Tastes great too. We have to have it tested regularly of course.

Hope there is a fence around it and that it isn't where the village takes its bath.

It's not a problem. We only bathe on the Summer Solstice when it coincides with a full moon during leap years.

A bloke built like the proverbial brick outhouse came into the pub yesterday and went arse over tit on a lump of dog sh1t. I said to him 'I just did that'. He knocked me spark out!

A dog was sat in the pub licking his John Thomas. I said to the dog's owner 'I wish I could do that'. He replied, 'Give him a packet of crisps and he might let you'.

I shall try to refrain from posting any further corny dog cracks.
