Have you ever had a Thunderclap Headache During Orgasm?
Hi All

I have just experienced these headaches for the second time in my life so I thought I would do some research and came across your forum. It's great to see I am not alone and thought I would share my own experience hopefully for the benefit of others

I am 39 male, fit and healthy with a an equally healthy sex drive.

The first time I had the headaches was in 2002. I had not had sex for a while and had just started sleeping with a new girlfriend. The headaches continued for about 2 weeks until one dday instead of "trying to make myself come" I just "let her do it to me". After that the headaches went away completely until the other day.

After 18 months of no relationship (and sex) I have found a wonderful new girlfriend. The same thing has started to happen. What I can see for myself is that my desire to impress / my desire to experience orgasm with her is having me strain mentally and physically for that orgasm (even when I masturbate)  and THAT is whta causes the headaches for me.

Tonight I shall be seeing her and intend to relax, and surrender myself into her capable hands and hoepfully I will nip this reoccurence in the bud!

Hi,

This happened to me today for the third time in a year. That's why I went on the web to see if it was something other people experienced.
It's very scary. The headache feels like all the capillaries in all parts of your head have burst - or yes, mate, like an anyurism and I don't know how to spell that either or what that feels like....Many hours later with some otc medication I still feel the throbbing (in my head![8D] The other two times it happened it actually put me off sex for awhile....I think there is something to it either emotionally or breathe wise or something......
It was excrutiating...I practically drank a bottle of Nyquil to try to dull the pain...Cold Presses, Heating pad...eventually after a few hours it subsided but as I say it's still there....

Okay, here is the Medical Term for it Coital Migraines!  No treatment founded as of yet.  Relax and go to the doctor.  He will prescribe a medication for you that will alleviate the migraine.  I will getting the medication name for you that I know that is used to treat this problem.

Relaxing does help - however, I am still getting the headaches and the fear of them is not helping - I have managed to come a few times without having my head split open, largely by taking it slowly and breathing easily.

I am going to investigate acupuncture and will report back on my findings. I have seen others recommend medication such as Beta blockers, however, they are not good for your liver and for men they tend to shut off sex drive / cause impotence (and viagra is not the way to counteract that problem in this particular case if blood pressure is a possible cause !!)

Topamax is a medicine prescribed for the migraine in these situations...but check with your doctor as this medication does not work for everyone!  Blood work is needing to be done first!

I also have experienced these intense and very painful headaches immediately before and during an orgasm.  It hasn't happened often and has only come on during a small percentage of orgasms but to have just a half dozen is an experience I'll never forget.  The first time it happened, like I've read in the other entries, you have no clue what's happening.  I wondered if I had a brain tumor or was in the beginning stage of having a stroke.  The pain came on out of nowhere and went across my head from temple to temple.  The headache goes away within an hour for me only leaving a slight hint of one for a few more hours. I will say that when it happens I have immediately taken a few baby aspirin, just in case.  I've read all the reasons people have suggested as the cause of these and they all make sense.  I'm going to pay closer attention to all the circumstances surrounding my next one.  I don't believe I hold my breath but I will watch out for that. I've also wondered if they are related to menopause because I am 52 and post menopausal but I see that much younger women and a few men have had them so that rules that out.  I've also wondered whether sinus issues may have a bearing as I do get sinus headaches and the times I experienced this headache I was always on my back and my head was turned to my right for a period of time. Was curious if my sinus was maybe draining, or not draining, and causing this.  Another possibility is that since menopause, and on a monthly basis around the time I would've been menstruating,  I get a migraine with auras (fortification spectrums).  I never had these until 50 either.  Could they even be related somehow....who knows.  I was wondering if anyone that's commented on this subject has gotten any type of additional explanation for them.  I was relieved to see I wasn't alone, although to the people that have written, I feel your pain...literally. Any additional info would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

My biggest pain was in my temples.  This lead me to believe at first it had something to do with allergies and sinuses(I'm on two allergy medications in addition to shots... I have them severely, so it wouldn't have been out of place).  The other point that seemed to give me trouble was slightly behind my earslobes, running down the back of my neck, off to the sides (Hope this makes sense... Maybe an inch from my spine on both sides).  I got a faint dizziness, and my head got slightly warm for a minute.

I plan on calling my doctor tomorrow to make sure it's nothing severe.  I sorta panicked when it happened, so I wanted to get online and see if it happened to anyone else, and if so, what it was.  I'll try to keep you updated.  Just adding my story in, and thanking those with advice.

Boy, I love Google and this forum!  I'm still hurting from my third "O" in a row that gave me the same symptoms that you describe.  I'm wondering... from what I've read here, some of us have had some sort of sinus drainage.  Personally I have had a difficult time swallowing for the past little while combined with an unusually thick phlegm deep in my throat.  This has caused me to constantly "clear".

I've been through a recent treatment of antibiotics for a weird staph infection that developed on my arm.  The eruptions on my arm are gone, but the (sinus?) drainage remains.  I mention all this because until recently I've never had any health issues, so I feel that they are related somehow.  Maybe it's just age related stuff (just turned 50)?

I have scheduled an appointment with an ENT Doc after the weekend to investigate.  I'll mention the coital migraine and all the rest while there.

I came across this discussion whilst browsing for information on these headaches, and have registered so that I can contribute to the discussion.

I have had 3 of these headaches now, [all within the last couple of days] and they are very frightening.  The first two, came on very suddenly, at the point of orgasm.  The third, this morning, whilst gagging on a bit of phlegm stuck in my throat [I have a bit of a chest infection, i think].

The pain is excrutiating, and is centered directly behind my eyes.  If feels like they're being pushed out from behind.  On all occasions, i've quickly gobbled down some aspirin, so I don't really know how long they'd last without medication.

Information on the web is a bit worrying - talk of aneurisms and such - so i'll be seeing the doc, later today, if possible.

Oh, and for those who are concerned about age - I'm a 49 year old female, - almost 50 in fact.  I've never had these headaches before.  I gave up smoking around 8 weeks ago, and am overweight.

I'm off now, to ring the doctors surgery to make an appointment.  I'll let you know how i got on.

Barbara,

I, too, am having an unusual sinus drainage deep in my throat.  I'm constantly clearing this phlegm.  This seems to be a common sympton shared by several of us.  I'm going to treat that and see if the head explosions stop.

I too have experienced these frightening headaches. I experienced one with an orgasm, but I also experienced one under a different circumstance. I thought this might be helpful in figuring it all out.

I was singing with my husband's band. They had given me little warning, and so I rushed up, a bit out of breath and started to sing. It was outdoors, and I was facing the sun. Out of nowhere I got this Bam! headache. As others have described it - behind my eyes, incrdeibly intense pain. I somehow continued singing, went off stage, sat down and then the throbbing began. This stupid headache lasted 2-3 days. I am tired of taking so many pain pills, even if they are otc.

I too have sinus issues. I have a cyst in one sinus which causes blockage. As a result of this as soon as winter rolls around I clean out my sinuses every day using a ball syringe. This helps me cut down on colds considerably, and also on headaches. All my life my headaches have been behind my eyes, in the front of my head.

So the commonality of sinus issues would seem to be important. And I also agree with concentrating on breathing, as when I have done that I have not experienced it. But Who! wants to concentrate on breathing while in the throes of passion!?

Ah well...discovering this forum has been very helpful and at least put my fears to rest.

Eric,
I don't know why my response didn't post but I'll try one last time.  I have the same post nasal drip that you describe. It's very bad.   I've given it much thought since finding this site and the thing that doesn't make sense if it IS sinus related, is why ONLY during orgasm?....atleast for the majority of us.  THAT'S the million dollar question.  I would think that we'd get these more often and under all kinds of conditions but we don't for some reason.  Hopefully if we all put our heads together we'll figure it out.  There has to be one thing we all have in common and just haven't hit on it yet.  I'm gonna' be checking this daily and eventually maybe we'll all be lucky enough to figure this out and end these once and for all.  Nobody should ever have to suffer from these....they're horrendous.

Thanks for talking about this.  I am a 21 year old female, and I started having this problem four days ago.  I thought it was just a coincidence, but it has occurred 6 times.  My boyfriend and I keep trying and hope that it won't happen, but every time, about 10 seconds before I am about to have an orgasm, the headache comes and I have to stop.  The first time it happened, the pain hit me right as I climaxed - it hit me so hard I couldn't see.  Now, it builds for about 10 seconds and then sometimes takes a day to go away.  What the hell?!?!  I called my gyno and she was at a loss.  Has anyone been able to get rid of this prolem?

I beleive if you had experienced any kind of sudden, extreme headache (Thunderclap) that you should seek medical advice. I base this on past experience and online research (most online professionals reccommend you consult your GP, just to rule out anything untoward).

I've been having this same trouble and upon further research found that they're considered to be exertion headaches.
What I don't understand is that I don't get these headaches if I exert myself in otherways.
I've had this situation previously approximately 5 years ago & it went away with a little abstinence.
I hope this helps anyone.

Have you ever had a Thunderclap Headache During Orgasm?

I'm leaning towards a blood pressure issue.  I had my first orgasm headache 3 days ago.  I was having extremely vigorous sex with my wife "doggy style" and at the exact moment of orgasm I had the most tremendous, intense headache ever.  It came on powerfully all at once, so much so that I lost my vision and became weak and faint and had to drop on my back.  I felt it mainly in my temples in the first split second then it exploded in a quick, pulsating pain all over my head but mainly my temples, behind my eyes, below my ears, and on either side of the base of my head where my spine enters.  It felt like a bomb went off in my head.  It was the most pain I have ever experienced.  I laid there half-blind and in agony, grabbing my head and freaking out my wife, concentrating on deep, slow breathing trying to "calm the pain down".  After a minute I was able to open my eyes.  SHortly after, I begin to see clearly and the pain was all gone after 5 minutes leaving only a twitching right eyelid for an hour or so.

I have never had problems with headaches of any kind and I too thought I was about to die.  I've done some research and can report the following:  I repeated the experience, but no where near as intensly, yesterday while masterbating.  It felt closely related to my blood pressure and breathing.  I have gained 30 pounds over the last year and my blood pressure has been on my mind.  I bought a BP machine and over the last 2 days I have averaged 139/89 which is a borderline problem.  As a test I put the machine on this evening, started masterbating, and hit "start" about 2 seconds prior to climax.  My pressure was through the roof at 187/98 and the pulsing of the intense pain in my head was keeping time with the blinking pulse light on the machine.  I am fairly certain that my weight gain aver the last year has increased my blood pressure and is causing these headaches during orgasm.

I will start a weight lose regimen, monitor my BP, and report back in the future.  As a side topic, this is really wierding me out.  I'm afraid to have sex for fear of that pain....and I'm a sex-loving fool!!  The first, original thunderclap was actually traumatic.  I don't think that's too strong of a word.  stage1power@yahoo.com
