Carapace was the first thing that sprung to my mind too, but carapaces don't open.  I believe that what tangoblue is thinking of are called the Wing Covers.

...And its claws are as big as cups, and for some reason it's got a tremendous fear of stamps! And Mrs Doyle was telling me it's got magnets on its tail, so if you're made out of metal it can attach itself to you! And instead of a mouth it's got four arses!

Yup, that's the fella.  I think I've also heard them called Wing Cases too.

The carapace rings a bell, i thaught that there was only one outside 'hard shell'.
