Can ironing clothes make them more creased?

Anthony asked the Naked Scientists:
My mum always tells me not to iron my t-shirt if it is a little bit creased.
She says that if I iron it once, it will get wrinkled and creased faster, and so I'll have to iron it every time. She says if I don't iron it, then it will not get creased very much (it will stay a little bit creased but not get worse).
Is there any scientific reasoning behind this? or is it just an "old wives tale"?
Thanks.

I sense an experiment; iron the left half.
