Why Does Dead Fishy Fred Float ?
« on: 23/07/2010 14:58:23 »

Dearest  Dead-Fish-Floatologists….

As a sheepy I of course am used as a natural flotation device. Floating is great and is my all time favourite non sinking buoyant thing to do when in water.

See Fred here ?

Fishy Fred Floating

Fred quit the Earth a couple of days ago and since then he’s been well lazy, just lying around doing nothing and enjoying some floating fun-ness !

Why’s that then ?…why does Dead Fishy Fred float ?

Ewe see….if I knew this then I would not be asking this and seeing as the only way to know something nowadays is by learning it I thought I’d ask ewe lot .....cos ewe’re all like.....well klevur and stuff !

I did ask Neda our Bulgarian slave cleaner but all she did was  give me a recipe for mousakka....so..no luck there !!

Can ewe help ?

Thanks peeps

Hugs and shmishes

My goldfish was called Fred as well - what is it, buried deep in the English persona, that makes us call fish Fred.

Air-bladder?

The bacteria in the fish gut are still alive and still making gas that normally the fish would either pass out by dissolving in its blood and removing via the gills, or by letting it out the rear. This gas then blows the fish insides up so it floats until it either bursts from having too much gas inside or the bacteria eat though the fish to freedom.

Either way you overfed them.........

Perhaps the fish were just plain greedy and should have stored excess food in their fishy larder !....fishies should know better than to stuff themselves silly !!...sheeshh !!

We had a goldfish called Hitler (He had a black mustache.) He used to swim up-side-down. He had an infection in his swim bladder. When he died he floated the right way up.

BTW, if I might divert the topic in the general direction of actual science ( [;D] ) for just a moment, did you know that electronic fish finders (that's the things anglers put on their boats so they can see the fish "waving" at them) "ping" the air bladder in fish to determine their position?

Is it some kind of Karma sutra fish finder if you know their position?

Why do you think anglers spend so much time looking at their fish finders?
