"In an unusual case, a 47-year old former miner in Britain was finally able get rid of his earache

after doctors removed a tooth that had got stuck in his ear"

Maybe he thought it would improve his radio reception?

Lucille Ball claimed she could receive radio via her teeth ...

Quote
Ball revealed in this interview that the strangest thing to ever happen to her was after she had some dental work completed and after placing lead fillings in her teeth, she started hearing radio stations in her head. She explained coming home one night from the studio and as she passed one area, she heard what she thought was morse code or a "tapping". She stated that "As I backed up it got stronger. The next morning, I reported it to the authorities and upon investigation, they found a Japanese radio transmitter that had been buried and was actively transmitting codes back to the Japanese.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucille_Ball#Later_career

But I think Lucy was telling porkies.

Various materials can be used in a cat's whisker radio, but the antenna has to be tens of meters long.

That's true.

A very long time ago, I made a tape recorder amplifier using some new fangled (at the time) integrated circuits. The design probably came out of Practical Electronics or something. (The deck was one of those Dreadnought numbers that Ferrograph produced. Talk about a brick shouthouse!)

There was no way I could stop the !@#$%^& thing from picking up the local BBC radio station! Shortly thereafter, I concluded that digital was the only way to go.

In Europe we can still get Radio Moscow on just about any device that has an audio amplifier which isn't shielded, e.g.

Your distortions are in a metal enclosure, which is connected to ground (via the jacks). I had already the pleasure to listen to Radio Moscow, when I tried out my distortion+ clone without enclosure.

If you don't fancy a heavy metal case for your project there is paint with conductive (carbon/metal) particles which can be sprayed onto the inside of plastic cases to screen out radio frequency interference.
