Are ion-producing bracelets beneficial?
« on: 20/10/2010 08:30:06 »
Nic Hazell  asked the Naked Scientists:

Hi Chris.

I was wondering if there is anything to these bracelets that allegedly produce ions and heal you, or somehow give you health benefits.

The manufacturers claim to have "woven ion-producing materials", called "stayers", into the fabric of their bracelets.

A number of people are wearing them.

Kind Regards

Nic

What do you think?

They probably work very well for the manufacturers, producing a good deal of valuable income, but medically, their only effect would probably be the same as any other placebo.

It works on a very basic three-step principle:

1) Take a cheap piece of junk.
2) Come up with a name that has some fancy sounding "scientific" word.
3) Profit!

That's how you get your magnetic bands, holographic patches, ionic bracelets and quantum healing devices!

So, you're saying my aluminum lined bowler hat isn't stopping them from controlling my thoughts then?

Come to think of it, you could be right. I've been having some really strange ideas recently.

What about my lead lined PJs?

Or you could fold it in half.
The bracelet, that is.

That reminds me of a Limerick which is entirely unsuitable for this forum, although I believe it did involve a man of Kent, or maybe it was Ghent.
