I think there are many courses and books that you can buy that help you learn how to Speed-Read and almost perfect a photgraphic memory. I have never tried them though.

Michael - there are lots of tricks. My favourite is PQRST. The way it works is this...

Select a piece of text to learn... not too long; say a page or so, but it depends really on the amount of content. Anyway, not too much.
P - Peruse it. Just glance through it quickly to get an overall view of the content.
Q - Questions. Write down questions you should be able to answer after you've learned it.
R - Read. Take your time. Read & re-read until you're sure you understand it.
S - Self-test. Answer the questions.
T - Talk. Talk to yourself about what you've read. Imagine yourself trying to explain it to someone with no knowledge of the subject. Think of analogies to use, how it may relate to other things you already know.

This technique uses what's known as Deep Processing (Craik and Lockhart, 1972). Rather than just reading something, you're processing the information in more than 1 way - reading, writing & talking. Plus, any analogies you think of will help you remember.
It's the technique I used to get through my psychology studies and it certainly stood me in good stead.
Don't try to do too much in 1 sitting. Around 45 mins is the max for most people, then take a 10-15 minute break. If you try doing more, it'll be a total waste of time.
Also, bear in mind that short term memory (STM) can only handle 7 quanta of information at a time. That's why we have trouble remembering number sequences containing more than 7 digits. The quanta have to be aggregated to enable us to remember more. For instance, someone's phone number. If the area code is 1 you're familiar with, that would count as 1 quanta, so you'd be more likely to remember the whole thing. If it's a new 1 to you, that's 5 quanta taken up straight away. Aggregating the quanta is the only way you'll get more into STM.

Ariel - they're very similar. They both use deep processing.
