Simple Math Problem! ...
« on: 24/03/2006 22:42:05 »
Solve this as quick as you can in your head!

Take 1000. Add 40.Add another 1000. Add 30. 1000 again Plus 20. Plus 1000. And plus 10. What is the total ?

Depends upon your interpretation of language.

The simplest interpretation would to be assume pure addition throughout, which amounts to 4100.

On the other hand, the word 'take' at the beginning could be interpret as a subtraction, giving you only 2100.

The third '1000' does not even specify whether addition or subtraction is to be performed, and thus one take an arbitrary view that this should be another subtraction, which would amount to a mere 100.

Not sure what this is all meant to prove.

Incidentally, it is easier if you calculate it in a two pass operation, with the smaller numbers summed from right to left, rather than left to right.

ahh tis alright ariel i used to work in a bookies and had to get mental arithmatic right first time but it is the type of problem many would fall for

J.B.S Haldane on the perforated eardrums which were a consequence of his pressure experiments "the drum generally heals up; and if a hole remains in it, although one is somewhat deaf, one can blow tobacco smoke out of  the ear in question, which is a social accomplishment".
