Why does the number of segments of a satsuma dictate how sweet it is?

Satsumas & Mandarins!

Why is it that when you eat a Mandarin or Satsuma, the number of segments = how sweet they are? ie: Odd number = Sweeter than even numbers of segments.

What do you think?
